Problems with vaults are almost always due to the following mechanism: hinges are formed so the structure which is created as statically indeterminable first becomes isostatic and then weak. A cracked vault or arch may not collapse: this is possible if the pressure curve remains within the sections. If it doesn’t, hinges form in the intrados or the extrados and there is loss of balance.
The best way to reinforce arches and vaults is to lay a strap in the intrados and in the extrados: this cuts down the risk of forming hinges. Unfortunately this is not always possible: is the vaults have a fresco, the operation is carried out in the extrados. To achieve a work surface as regular as possible, we recommend making a balancing strip with anti-shrinkage mortar.
